Overview
This year the Living Donation Conference will be divided into two parts. Part 1 will be a introductory training course on the essential aspects of clinical, psychosocial, advocacy, administrative, financial, quality and regulatory issues related to living donation. Part 2 is an in-person conference over April 18-20, 2023, at Loews Coronado Bay in San Diego, CA.
Part 1: Virtual Program - February 24 - March 17, 2023.
This is an introductory course for individuals with less than 2 years of experience in the care of the living donor. This program also serves as a refresher course to those who would like to ensure they have the fundamental building blocks in place for a successful Living Donation Program. The attendees will have 3 weeks to review the presentations, complete the evaluation and pass the post test.
Part 1 will be held over February 24 - March 17, 2023. Participants must complete a quiz after each week of lectures and receive a passing grade of 75% to receive Nursing and ABTC educational credits.
The registration fee is $250 for the virtual Part 1 Course. Early registration is encouraged; registration closes strictly on March 3, 2022 and fees are non-refundable.

Part 2: In-person conference - April 18-20, 2023, at Loews Coronado Bay in San Diego, CA.
Part 2 is an in-person conference over April 18-20, 2023, at Loews Coronado Bay in San Diego, CA. This educational conference provides kidney and liver sessions for the experienced practitioners and continuing education/plenary sessions.
The registration fee is $699 for the in-person Part 2 Conference. Registration and payment is expected prior to the meeting. The course will have a limited number of registrants. Early registration is encouraged; registration closes March 27, 2023; no on-site registrations will be accepted. Registration is limited and fees are not refundable after March 27, 2023. Registrations received after March 27, 2023 are subject to a late registration fee of $100.00.
AFDT is committed to the safety of our attendees, speakers and staff. Although this will be an in-person event, we will be following all local and state safety protocols in accordance with CDC guidelines in place during the Living Donation Conference.

Part 1 - Virtual Program
FORMAT: (attendee must score 80% or higher).
The presentations for this course will be released on February 24, 2023 on the video platform. Attendees will have until March 17 to view the presentations, complete the evaluation survey and pass the required posttest. Attendees must score a 75% or higher on the posttest. The evaluation survey and posttest closes on March 17. If you do not submit the evaluation survey and pass the posttest, attendees are not eligible to receive AACN Nursing, or CEPTC certificates. Once the survey has closed, it cannot be re-opened.
Earned certificates will be emailed to the email address attendees used to register with, on or before March 27, 2023. **If you do not receive an email with your certificate by this date – check your spam box. This could be because you did not complete and submit the survey.
OBJECTIVES:
Introductory Course
- Discuss CMS and OPTN/UNOS regulatory requirements for living donor programs
- Outline the live donor process from intake through long term follow-up
- Describe the medical evaluation of the living donor, including assessment of short and long term risks
- Describe the surgical evaluation and procedure for a living donor
- Describe the goals of informed consent for living donors
- Outline the financial considerations for living donation
- Identify required elements of the donor psychosocial assessment
- Identify elements of the Independent Living Donor Advocate Interview
- Identify the basic principles related to histocompatibility that apply to living donor transplantation
- Discuss the foundational concepts of kidney paired donation

- Identify and review the evolution of living liver transplantation
- Discuss living liver donation from a donor’s perspective
- Describe the strategies to expand a living donor program
- Discuss strategies to overcome programmatic challenges for a living program
- Discuss living donation from a donor’s perspective
- Describe the impact of culture on communication
- Identify the value of cultural humility and cultural intelligence
- Describe emerging best practices to manage the care of living donors
- Discuss strategies to overcome barriers for living donation
- Describe challenges in assessing substance use in living donors
- Discuss the safety, screening and best practices for an undocumented donor
- Discuss the complexities and different approaches to provide the best level of care for donors with a psychiatric history
- Describe strategies for managing donors with novel microbes (covid-19, mpox, etc)
- Discuss the emerging practices in genetic testing in kidney and liver living donation
- Identify the risk factors of the obese donor and describesustainable interventions
- Review the positives and negatives in eplet matching
- Discuss financial barriers and current initiatives to make living donation cost neutral
- Identify opportunities for performance improvement in living donation
LIVER TRACK
- Review Current practice of LDLT in the United States
- Discuss how to best engage liver transplant candidates to choose pursuing LDLT
- Review best practices in testing and counselling for hereditary diseases in the living liver donor candidate
- Discuss expanding the use of living liver donation including over weight and non-directed donors
- Describe how informed consent practices differ for the living liver donor candidate and understand how to improve the informed consent process
- Discuss consideration of living donation for patients with hepatocellular cancer

CALL FOR CASE STUDIES:
The faculty of the 14th Annual Living Donation Conference is requesting case study submissions for consideration for oral and poster presentation at the in-person conference this April.The faculty encourages all to take this opportunity to share with transplant colleagues your center’s journey down the path to gaining more knowledge of the essential aspects of clinical, psychosocial, advocacy, administrative, financial, quality and regulatory issues related to living donation.
Case studies must be submitted in the proper format and by the February 3 deadline at 11:59 ET. The primary authors of the case studies that are selected for oral presentation will be asked to attend the conference and present for a total of 15 minutes long on their topic or present their poster at the networking reception on April 18, 2022.
Important Format & Deadline Information
TRAVEL GRANT INFORMATION:
This year the American Foundation for Donation (AFDT) will offer a limited number of travel grants to a select number of submitters. The travel grants will be in the amount of $1,000 (USD) to eligible transplant professionals whose case study is accepted for oral presentation. Grants are awarded to help abstract presenters cover the cost of travel and lodging to present their abstract at the 2023 Living Donation Conference, during the conference dates of April 18-20, 2023. The applicant must be one of the abstract authors and the case study must be presented at the meeting for the grant to be awarded. The travel grants are not applicable for virtual presentations in the event the in-person meeting does not take place. The grant will be issued immediately following the meeting.
